I know I’ve been pretty quiet lately, and there are a few good reasons why. First of all, this is August. The lazy days of summer when nobody really works or does anything productive. Right? You guys out there with real jobs? You’re not actually working, right?
Secondly, we’ve had a lot going on lately, including a few weekends away here and there, and most notably, planning an upcoming trip to Poland for Max’s wedding. And we’re taking Nora. We tell everybody this. “And guess what? We’re taking Nora.” Then we wait and see how badly they want to tell us we’re crazy.
Of course, I don’t think we’re crazy, and in fact can’t wait for this little family adventure, which will also include a visit to Prague. I’m loving the idea of this trip because it’s probably not somewhere I’d have gone anytime soon if not for this wedding. Planning is more challenging than I’m used to. All the z’s and consonants in general in every hotel name and restaurant listing. Let’s face it, I’m probably never going to learn Polish.
But that’s the thing. I think getting out of your comfort zone is really important every now and then. Like taking a nine-hour flight with your toddler, who throws violent, violent tantrums when the oatmeal isn’t done as fast as she wants it. Guess what, Nora? No oatmeal on airplanes. But castles in Krakow and pierogies and making new friends in faraway places? Worth it.

Have an awesome trip!
Someone recently told me that my boys would “never remember” our overseas trip as though it were some sort of crime to “waste our money” on it. But you know what? It doesn’t matter if they remember it, because I remember it, and they were there. So ignore the people calling you crazy! As we like to say…we may be crazy, but you only live once.
Oh, and did you get a MagnaDoodle yet? You really need one. It’s a lifesaver. Also, a bag of M&Ms can’t hurt. Just in case.

I have a friend from highschool who lives there if you’re looking for recommendations.

I was through the Eastern Block in 1989…and I have to say…it was AWESOME! The people are awesome and Nora will love it. But, but, but…I have never been more challenged than trying to decipher the cyrillic-esque languages. Russia, Poland, Czechoslavakia, Bulgaria…et al. Just dumb stuff like trying to buy toothpaste and ending up with denture cream. (I mean, they were all in tubes in the “teeth section” in Prague.)

I will have you know that you are wrong. There IS oatmeal on airplanes. Granted, they charge you quite a bit for that oatmeal, but it’s available! Miss Nora can thank me later for pointing this out :-)

I think it’s all about your expectations. If you view having to stay behind when Nora needs a nap a fair price for having her there with you, it is not crazy at all to set off on your adventure. Sounds like fun to me, and since sometimes you and Justin need naps, too, you might have more fun if you rest when the baby rests!
